Ask someone to repeat naturally in Hindi

You can request a repeat, identify the part you missed, or ask for slower delivery. Explain the listening problem rather than implying the speaker's information is wrong.

Three ways to say it

  1. माफ़ कीजिए, क्या आप फिर से कह सकते हैं?maaf kijiye, kya aap phir se kah sakte hain?

Sorry, could you say that again?

A polite general repeat request when you missed the whole message.

  2. आखिरी हिस्सा सुनाई नहीं दिया।aakhiri hissa sunaai nahin diya.

I didn't catch the last part.

Identify the last part as the part you did not hear clearly.

  3. क्या आप थोड़ा धीरे बोल सकते हैं?kya aap thoda dheere bol sakte hain?

Could you say it a little more slowly?

Ask for a slower version when hearing the same speed again would not help.

Avoid translating word by word

In English, 'I didn't catch that' means you did not hear or understand it; 'catch' does not refer to grabbing something. The examples use a natural hearing or understanding expression for that situation.

See the difference in context

Hearing the time of a meeting

बैठक साढ़े नौ बजे शुरू होती है।baithak saadhe nau baje shuroo hoti hai.

The meeting starts at half past nine.

माफ़ कीजिए, क्या आप फिर से कह सकते हैं?maaf kijiye, kya aap phir se kah sakte hain?

Sorry, could you say that again?

Missing the last part of directions

हम स्टेशन पर टिकट घर के पास मिलेंगे।ham station par ticket ghar ke paas milenge.

We meet at the station, beside the ticket office.

आखिरी हिस्सा सुनाई नहीं दिया।aakhiri hissa sunaai nahin diya.

I didn't catch the last part.

Your turn

Ask the person to say the message a little more slowly. Make the listening adjustment specific.

A note on speaking Hindi

These examples generally use respectful आप (aap). Familiar तुम (tum) changes the verb ending, and तू (tu) can sound too intimate or disrespectful in the wrong relationship. Where gender changes a first-person form, choose the version that describes the speaker.

Read the Devanagari alongside the romanization. Romanization is a reading aid rather than an exact description of every sound. Everyday Hindi can use familiar loanwords, while a literal English word order may sound unnatural.
