End a conversation naturally in Portuguese

A considerate ending acknowledges the conversation and signals that you are leaving. Mention a reason or another conversation only when it reflects what you actually intend.

Three ways to say it

  1. Foi bom conversar com você.

It was nice talking to you.

Close a pleasant conversation with a brief acknowledgment.

  2. É melhor eu ir. Até breve.

I'd better get going. See you soon.

Signal that you need to leave and add a friendly goodbye.

  3. Preciso voltar ao trabalho, mas vamos conversar de novo em breve.

I have to get back to work, but let's talk again soon.

Explain that you must return to work while expressing an intention to talk again.

Avoid translating word by word

English 'I'd better get going' signals that it is time to leave; 'get' is not receiving an object and 'better' is not comparing travel quality. Use the complete leaving expression shown in the target language.

Closing a short chat

Obrigado / obrigada pela conversa.

Thanks for the chat.

Foi bom conversar com você.

Leaving when invited to stay longer

Você quer ficar mais um pouco?

Do you want to stay a little longer?

É melhor eu ir. Até breve.

I'd better get going. See you soon.

Your turn

End a conversation because you need to return to work. Say that you would like to talk again soon.

A note on speaking Portuguese

These guides use Brazilian Portuguese. Você is a common everyday address; senhor or senhora may fit a more formal interaction. Eu gostaria and poderia can soften requests without making them complicated.

Keep the accents and nasal spellings, such as não and conexão. Portuguese in Portugal may use different everyday vocabulary or pronouns. The examples aim for broadly understandable Brazilian wording.
