Disagree politely naturally in German

You can disagree while showing that you have heard the other person's view. State a different perspective, question a choice, or invite another option without pretending to agree.

Three ways to say it

  1. Ich verstehe, aber ich sehe das anders.

I understand, but I see it differently.

Acknowledge the view and state that you see it differently.

  2. Ich bin nicht sicher, ob das die beste Möglichkeit ist.

I'm not sure that's the best option.

Express doubt about a proposed choice without dismissing the person.

  3. Könnten wir uns eine andere Möglichkeit ansehen?

Could we look at another possibility?

Move the discussion toward considering another possibility together.

Avoid translating word by word

English 'I see it differently' describes an opinion, not eyesight. Use the full expression for having a different view; a literal visual description may sound as though you are discussing what you can physically see.

Choosing between prices and other qualities

Ich finde, wir sollten die günstigere Variante wählen.

I think we should choose the cheaper one.

Ich verstehe, aber ich sehe das anders.

I understand, but I see it differently.

Discussing whether to cancel an event

Sagen wir die ganze Veranstaltung ab.

Let's cancel the whole event.

Ich bin nicht sicher, ob das die beste Möglichkeit ist.

I'm not sure that's the best option.

Your turn

You want to keep the discussion constructive. Ask whether you can consider another possibility together.

A note on speaking German

Use Sie for formal address and du with people you address informally. Könnten Sie …? is a useful polite request. Keep noun capitals and the verb position shown in each complete sentence.

The examples preserve German accents and ß. Read a full sentence before replacing a detail: a subordinate clause can move the verb to the end, and case can change an article or pronoun.
