Decline an invitation naturally in Italian
A clear decline helps the host plan. Acknowledge the invitation, explain an existing commitment if you want to, or suggest a new time when you genuinely want to meet.
Three ways to say it
Grazie per l'invito, ma non posso venire.
Thanks for inviting me, but I can't come.
Give a clear thanks and decline without inventing a reason.
Mi piacerebbe, ma ho già un impegno.
I'd love to, but I already have plans.
Express interest while explaining that you already have plans.
Questa volta non posso. Possiamo vederci la settimana prossima?
I can't make it this time. Could we meet next week?
Decline this occasion and offer a specific opportunity to meet later.
Avoid translating word by word
English 'I can't make it' means you cannot attend, not that you cannot manufacture something. Use the complete attendance expression shown in the target language.

Puoi venire alla mia festa sabato?
Can you come to my party on Saturday?
Grazie per l'invito, ma non posso venire.

A dinner invitation that conflicts with plans
Ti va di cenare insieme domani?
Would you like to have dinner tomorrow?
Mi piacerebbe, ma ho già un impegno.
I'd love to, but I already have plans.

A note on speaking Italian
Use tu with friends and Lei with someone you address formally. A request with vorrei or potrebbe can soften the tone; it still helps to say what you need clearly. The examples label the situation so you can choose the appropriate relationship.
Read doubled consonants distinctly and keep the written accents. The English translation explains the intended message; Italian often chooses a different construction rather than matching each English word.
