Request service naturally in Portuguese
In a café or restaurant, a clear order can be courteous without a long introduction. Use a straightforward polite order, a request for an extra item, or a considerate timing phrase.
Three ways to say it
Eu gostaria de um café, por favor.
I'd like a coffee, please.
Place a simple order with the conventional polite wording.
Eu poderia pedir um pouco de água, por favor?
Could I have some water, please?
Ask for an additional item while giving the staff member a clear request.
Quando tiver um momento, poderia trazer a conta?
When you have a moment, could we have the bill?
Request the bill while acknowledging that the staff member may be busy.
Avoid translating word by word
English 'I would like' expresses a request here, not enjoyment of an imaginary object. A target language may use a conditional, a request verb, or a polite ending rather than translating each English word.

Ordering at a café
O que você gostaria de pedir?
What would you like?
Eu gostaria de um café, por favor.
I'd like a coffee, please.
Requesting something else at the table
Você quer mais alguma coisa?
Can I get you anything else?
Eu poderia pedir um pouco de água, por favor?
Could I have some water, please?
Your turn
Ask for the bill when the staff member has a moment. Use the complete polite request rather than translating 'have' as ownership.

A note on speaking Portuguese
These guides use Brazilian Portuguese. Você is a common everyday address; senhor or senhora may fit a more formal interaction. Eu gostaria and poderia can soften requests without making them complicated.
Keep the accents and nasal spellings, such as não and conexão. Portuguese in Portugal may use different everyday vocabulary or pronouns. The examples aim for broadly understandable Brazilian wording.
