  1. Partner

He tenido una semana difícil, pero no sé qué decir.

    Show English translation

I've had a hard week, but I'm not sure what to say.

  2. You

    ¿Te gustaría hablar de eso?

    Show English translation

Would you like to talk about it?

  3. Partner

Quizá después. ¿Puedo preguntarte por qué dejaste tu último trabajo?

    Show English translation

Maybe later. Can I ask why you left your last job?

  4. You

    Preferiría no hablar de eso.

    Show English translation

I'd prefer not to discuss that.

  5. Partner

Claro. Pensé que decidir hoy facilitaría las cosas.

    Show English translation

Of course. I thought deciding today would make things easier.

  6. You

Entiendo lo que quieres decir, pero necesito más tiempo.

    Show English translation

I see what you mean, but I need more time.

  7. Partner

Tómate tu tiempo. ¿Quieres que se lo cuente al grupo?

    Show English translation

Take your time. Would you like me to share this with the group?

  8. You

No me siento cómodo / cómoda con eso.

    Show English translation

I don't feel comfortable with that.

  9. Partner

No lo contaré. Podríamos vernos mañana en su lugar.

    Show English translation

I won't share it. We could meet tomorrow instead.

  10. You

    Déjame pensarlo.

    Show English translation

    Let me think about it.

Make it your own

  • Offer company instead of advice.
  • Set a different boundary.
  • Ask for time before answering.

Keep the useful expression and change the detail. There can be several appropriate answers; the revealed replies are examples to learn from.

A note on speaking Spanish

These guides use broadly understandable Latin American Spanish. Tú is familiar and usted is respectful or formal, with important regional variation. Me gustaría and ¿podría …? are useful for considerate requests.

Keep accent marks and opening question marks. Some regions choose different everyday words. Follow the complete example rather than substituting English words one by one, especially with pronouns and expressions of preference.
