Show empathy naturally in Spanish
Empathy acknowledges what someone has shared without claiming to know exactly how they feel. Recognize the difficulty, offer to listen, or ask whether company would help.
Three ways to say it
Eso suena difícil.
That sounds difficult.
Recognize the difficulty of the situation.
Estoy aquí si quieres hablar.
I'm here if you want to talk.
Offer to listen without requiring an immediate explanation.
¿Te ayudaría un poco de compañía?
Would some company help?
Offer company as a choice rather than assuming advice is wanted.
Avoid translating word by word
English 'I'm here if you want to talk' expresses availability and support; it need not describe your exact physical location. The target-language wording may say you can listen rather than translating 'here' literally.
See the difference in context
A friend describing a hard week
He tenido una semana muy difícil.
I've had a really hard week.
Eso suena difícil.
That sounds difficult.
Someone finding it difficult to explain what happened
No sé cómo explicar lo que pasó.
I don't know how to explain what happened.
Estoy aquí si quieres hablar.
I'm here if you want to talk.
Your turn
Offer company to someone who is having a difficult time. Ask whether it would help rather than assuming they want it.

A note on speaking Spanish
These guides use broadly understandable Latin American Spanish. Tú is familiar and usted is respectful or formal, with important regional variation. Me gustaría and ¿podría …? are useful for considerate requests.
Keep accent marks and opening question marks. Some regions choose different everyday words. Follow the complete example rather than substituting English words one by one, especially with pronouns and expressions of preference.
