Hindi Possession: Ka, Ki, Ke and Mere Paas

Use का, की, and के to connect an owner to a noun, and मेरे पास to say I have an object.

Make the possessive agree with the thing owned

का, की, and के connect an owner with something possessed. The form agrees with the thing owned, not with the owner. राम की किताब means Ram’s book because किताब is feminine; राम का घर uses masculine घर.

Learn my as mera, meri, or mere

मेरा, मेरी, and मेरे follow the same agreement idea. मेरा घर is my house, मेरी किताब is my book, and मेरे दोस्त can mean my male friends. Masculine oblique phrases also take -े: मेरे घर में, in my house.

Use paas for having objects

मेरे पास एक किताब है means I have a book, literally near me there is a book. यह मेरी किताब है means this is my book. These are different structures: one presents possession, while the other identifies an owner. Family relationships commonly use other constructions, so do not put every English have sentence into the पास pattern.

Possessive agreement

Possessive agreement
Thing ownedRam’sMy
Masculine singular direct: घरराम का घर (raam ka ghar)मेरा घर (mera ghar)
Feminine singular: किताबराम की किताब (raam ki kitaab)मेरी किताब (meri kitaab)
Masculine plural direct: दोस्तराम के दोस्त (raam ke dost)मेरे दोस्त (mere dost)
Masculine oblique: घर मेंराम के घर में (raam ke ghar mein)मेरे घर में (mere ghar mein)

की stays feminine with both singular and plural nouns. The possessed noun determines agreement.

    This is my book.

    मेरी agrees with feminine किताब.

  2. राम का घर बड़ा है।raam ka ghar bada hai.

Common mistakes to notice

  • To fix: राम का किताब

    Use: राम की किताब

किताब is feminine regardless of the owner’s gender.

  • To fix: मैं पास एक किताब है।

    Use: मेरे पास एक किताब है।

    Use the possessive/oblique construction मेरे पास, not मैं पास.

FAQ

Questions about this pattern

Does ka depend on whether the owner is male?

No. का, की, and के agree with the thing possessed, not the owner. A man’s book still uses की because किताब is feminine.

How do I say I have a phone?

मेरे पास एक फ़ोन है, mere paas ek fon hai. The पास construction is useful for possession of objects.

Is mere always plural?

No. मेरे can also be masculine oblique singular, as in मेरे घर में, in my house.
