Set a boundary naturally in Hindi

A boundary states your preference or limit. You do not have to explain private information to decline a topic, express discomfort, or ask for time alone.

Three ways to say it

  1. मैं इस बारे में बात नहीं करना चाहता / चाहती।main is baare mein baat nahin karna chaahta / chaahti.

I'd rather not talk about that.

Decline to discuss a private subject.

  2. मुझे यह ठीक नहीं लग रहा।mujhe yah theek nahin lag raha.

    I'm not comfortable with that.

State discomfort with a proposed action.

  3. आज मुझे कुछ समय अकेले रहना है।aaj mujhe kuchh samay akele rahna hai.

I need some time alone today.

Ask for time alone today without criticizing the other person.

Avoid translating word by word

English 'comfortable with that' refers to willingness or emotional ease here, not a comfortable chair. Use the full expression for discomfort or unwillingness and, if needed, state your request explicitly.

See the difference in context

A private question about income

आप कितना कमाते हैं?aap kitna kamaate hain?

How much money do you earn?

मैं इस बारे में बात नहीं करना चाहता / चाहती।main is baare mein baat nahin karna chaahta / chaahti.

I'd rather not talk about that.

Being asked about sharing a photo

क्या मैं आपकी तस्वीर ऑनलाइन साझा कर सकता / सकती हूँ?kya main aapki tasveer online saajha kar sakta / sakti hoon?

Can I share your photo online?

मुझे यह ठीक नहीं लग रहा।mujhe yah theek nahin lag raha.

I'm not comfortable with that.

Your turn

Tell someone that you need some time alone today. Keep the time and personal need clear.

Reveal a sample reply

आज मुझे कुछ समय अकेले रहना है।aaj mujhe kuchh samay akele rahna hai.

I need some time alone today.

A note on speaking Hindi

These examples generally use respectful आप (aap). Familiar तुम (tum) changes the verb ending, and तू (tu) can sound too intimate or disrespectful in the wrong relationship. Where gender changes a first-person form, choose the version that describes the speaker.

Read the Devanagari alongside the romanization. Romanization is a reading aid rather than an exact description of every sound. Everyday Hindi can use familiar loanwords, while a literal English word order may sound unnatural.
