How do I talk about the weather in Portuguese?

Use estar: está calor (it's hot), está frio (it's cold), está chovendo (it's raining). In Portugal the -ing form is different: está a chover. To ask about tomorrow, say Vai chover amanhã?

Is dog cachorro or cão?

In Brazil, the everyday word is o cachorro. In Portugal it is o cão, and there cachorro means a puppy. Brazilians know cão too, and you will see it on gate signs: Cuidado com o cão.

Are animal names masculine or feminine?

Each has a gender, and many change for the female animal: o gato, a gata. Some have only one form, like a cobra (snake) or o jacaré (caiman). For those, add macho or fêmea: a cobra macho.
