How do I ask for directions in German?

Start with Entschuldigung, then ask Wo ist…? or Wie komme ich zum Bahnhof? (How do I get to the station?). Use zum for der and das words, and zur for die words: zur Post.

Do I need cash in Germany?

Cards are widely accepted, but some small cafés, bakeries, and market stalls still prefer cash, called Bargeld. If you are not sure, ask Kann ich mit Karte zahlen? before you order.

What does Gleis mean?

Das Gleis is the track or platform at a train station. Tickets, screens, and announcements say things like Gleis 5, so it is one of the first travel words worth learning.
