Food & Drink in German
Eating in German-speaking countries runs from fresh Brötchen at the bakery in the morning to a warm meal at a Gasthaus in the evening. These words take you from die Speisekarte to die Rechnung, and every noun comes with der, die, or das. You will also find polite phrases for ordering, like ich hätte gern.

FAQ
Food & Drink in German: common questions
Do German food words have genders?
Yes, every one: der Kaffee, die Milch, das Bier. There is often no logic you can see, so learn each word together with its article, as these pages show it.
How do I ask for the bill in German?
Say die Rechnung, bitte, or more casually zahlen, bitte. The waiter will often ask zusammen oder getrennt? (together or separately?), because splitting the bill at the table is very common.
Do people tip in Germany?
Yes, but modestly. People usually round up or add around 5 to 10 percent, and they say the total when paying instead of leaving money on the table. Stimmt so means "keep the change".
