FAQ
Food & Drink in French: common questions
Why do French people say du pain and not le pain?
Du, de la, and des mean "some". Use them for an amount you don't count: je mange du pain (I eat some bread). Use le or la for things in general: j'aime le pain (I like bread).
How do I ask for the bill in French?
Say L'addition, s'il vous plaît. In France the waiter usually won't bring the bill until you ask, so you can stay at your table as long as you like.
How do I ask for tap water in a French restaurant?
Ask for une carafe d'eau, a jug of tap water, which is free. If you only ask for de l'eau, you may be offered bottled water, which you pay for.
