FAQ
Food & Drink in Italian: common questions
Do Italian food words have genders?
Yes. Every food word is masculine or feminine: il pane (bread) is masculine, la pasta is feminine. The article in front tells you which, so learn them together.
How do I ask for the bill in Italian?
Say il conto, per favore. In Italy the waiter usually will not bring the bill until you ask for it, because rushing guests is considered rude.
Is "caffè" the same as coffee in English?
Not quite. If you order un caffè in Italy you get an espresso. For a milky coffee ask for a cappuccino or a caffè latte, and note that latte alone just means milk.
