FAQ
Greetings & Essentials in Hindi: common questions
When should I use aap, tum, and tu?
Start with aap. It is polite with strangers, older people, and shop staff. Tum is for friends and people your age. Tu is very intimate, and using it with the wrong person can sound rude.
Is namaste the only way to say hello?
Namaste is the safest greeting, day or night. Among friends you will also hear hello and hi. In the morning some people say suprabhaat, but namaste is more common in everyday speech.
How do I say thank you in Hindi?
Both dhanyavaad and shukriya are common. Dhanyavaad feels a little more formal. In casual speech you will also hear thank you itself, especially in cities.
