People & Family in Polish
Polish family nouns often distinguish male and female forms: brat and siostra, syn and córka. Learn a relative’s dictionary form, then try a sentence such as mam brata, I have a brother. Polite address uses pan and pani rather than an English-style title before every first name.

FAQ
People & Family in Polish: common questions
What is the difference between przyjaciel and kolega?
Przyjaciel is a close friend. Kolega can be a colleague, classmate, or a male friend without implying the same closeness; koleżanka is the feminine form.
Why do I say mam brata rather than mam brat?
Brata is the accusative singular for the animate masculine noun brat. Mam takes a direct object, which requires that case.
Is rodzina singular?
Yes. Rodzina is a feminine singular noun for family. Rodzice means parents and is plural.
